Just Jedi and other Jedi groups in the community are often welcoming in new guests and members. Some of these guests are students seeking to assemble research papers and others are reporters or directors for documentaries. One of the most common questions asked is: “How does one ‘worship’ the force?”
First we should identify what “Worship” means. At dictionary.com we find the meaning as follows:
reverent honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred.
formal or ceremonious rendering of such honor and homage:
While there are some members and groups within the community that defines “The Force '' as a sentient being or type of god (Or even god himself) it's pretty commonly agreed that the Force is instead. Energy. Nothing more than that...Energy that permeates all things.
With the idea of the Force being energy. We can already opt out the concept of “Reverent Homage to a deity/God.” and since energy isn’t an object that is also opted out.
That being said. The “Idea” of something can also be a source of worship. A hope for a utopia, heaven or something promised as ‘greater’ than current realization. And thus one could say that the Force holds a promise of harmony and balance with the living world and universe around us.
In the end. The act of “Worship” is overal a self identified act. If you choose to put the concepts of “The Force” in a place of worship. Then go for it!
Traditionally however. I personally have seen little proof of such worship. Jedi by nature are seekers of knowledge and servants of those in need. They commonly aim towards self improvement and an open mindset that leads to new self discoveries. They do this by various acts of “Training” such as Meditation, Sensing (feeling the energy of things), and Empathy. But these acts are dedicated towards “Self” and “Return” (Aiding others with the tools gained through training) Worship is rarely if ever considered in such curriculums.
About the closest thing I can recall towards a sense of “Worship” would be the traditional “Meditation Relay” in which Jedi from all over the world dedicate a specific time to meditate in unison, or, assign Jedi to meditate on certain hours in order to fulfill one full day of meditation.
This tradition was commonly aimed at bonding and connecting with each other spiritually by performing a common act of interest in unison. These relays were generally arranged around New Years as a means of welcoming the new year on a spiritually positive mindset and perhaps a bit of hope that our common act would reach others.
But….whether you count that as a form of “Worship” or not, is entirely up to the individual.
Journal Entry: How do you feel about the “Worship” of the Force. Is it something you believe in? Why or why not? And if you do...how do you put it into practice?
