The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. -- Jedi Spock
Sacrifice :
In the early days of my studies I spent some time with the apprentice Eng Cabot as we studied under the great master Oorin Krell. We were in the forests of Yavin 4 when Cabot placed his hand on a rotted log and was promptly bitten by a delver basilisk. He did not flinch or hesitate in igniting his saber and promptly cutting his arm off at the elbow.
I was taught a valuable lesson that day in the forest by my friend's reaction. Had he hesitated at all the basilisk's venom would have claimed more of his arm, and in seconds his life as well. His hand and forearm were an easy choice over his life.
This is important to understand as a Jedi, as few decisions we make do not involve sacrifice. What comes with training and experience is the courage and conviction to make the cut, as well as the wisdom of knowing where to cut. Preservation of life is the way of the Force, and choosing the best way to do this is the way of the Jedi.
